“Who

(G. Byron)
Приветствие: Good morning, I am happy to see you at our
meeting. Let`start with
motto of our club:
“Coming together is a beginning
Keeping together is a process
Working together is a success”
Teacher:
Every country, every nation has its own customs and
traditions. Ukrainians are proud of their traditions and carefully keep them up.
The theme of our meeting is “Ukrainian National traditions” Today we are going
to concentrate on the folk traditions of Ukraine .
2. Основная часть
P. You can see a map of Ukraine on
the blackboard and many beautiful things
in our study. They are not new for you. For some time we have been learning and
speaking many interesting things about Ukraine . What
do you know about Ukraine ?
P. I`d like to tell a legend about Ukraine . Many
years ago the God made peoples and gave
them the land. Our forefathers were late and they were not given the land. They
came to the God. He was praying at the moment
and they could not interrupt him.
They waited. The God said that they were good and respectful. They told him
about the reason for their coming. The God proposed them the black land (soil).
Our forefathers said, “No, the German, French, Spanish and Italian people live
there. And the God answered, “then I`ll give you the land I have left for the
paradise. There is everything there: rivers, lakes, forests, deserts. But
remember: if you take care of it, it will be yours, if not – it will belong to
your enemies.”
Our forefathers went to
that land, settled there and have lived up there till nowadays. And their
country was called Ukraine .
Role –play
T. Imagine that you work in a travel bureau. Give
us some key facts about Ukraine to get the main idea about our country. Who
wants to be a guide?
P. Ukraine is a state in southeastern Europe . Ukraine borders on Poland , Slovakia and Hungary in the west and on Romania and
Moldava in the eastern one is Russia .
The
capital of our country is Kiev . The largest cities of Ukraine are Kiev , Kharkov , Odessa , lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhya and others.
I advise to visit some of them because they are beautiful.
The
main river is Dnipro. .
Our
country has a mild climate, an interesting history and culture, too. It is a
nice place to live and to travel in. Welcome to our country!
Men’s national clothes
(pictures)
P : I’d like to tell you about men’s clothes. The
main element of the men’s clothes is an embroidered shirt. It was interesting for
me to know that people used to say, «ДоВеликодня сорочка хоч I лихенькаб аби бiленька,»
«Як недiля, то й сорочка бiла». Men wore clothes without sleeves – KEPTAR or
LEIBYK – over the shirts.
There are two kinds of Ukrainian trousers: Narrow
trousers and Sharovary. Sharovary are almost
always red. Men wore sashes. They were long. The young men wore red and green sashes, the old men wore black
sashes.
There
is a tradition to wear hats and caps. By the way, it was a sin to go with an
uncovered head. There were fur caps. In summer men wore straw hats (bryl).
(Hay – makers sing a song)
Women’s national clothes
(Pictures)
P : I’d like to draw your attention to the women’s
blouse is the oldest piece of clothes of our foremothers. It was sewn of white
linen. It should be mentioned here that they embroidered it too. They said, «
Рукав як писанка, а личком як макiв цвiт».
Legend about appearing of the embroideries
P : Many years ago people made their clothes by
hand. Once a little girl asked her mother to sew her a new blouse. Her mother
did. The girl put her new blouse on and went to play with other children. The
children liked her new blouse. One girl said, “I shall ask my mum to sew me
such a blouse and decorate it with black thread. The mother of another girl had
only black and red threads. She embroidered the blouse with black and red
threads. All the girls liked such blouses with colorful threads.
It
must be stressed here that at the end of the X1th century Anna, the daughter of
Prince Volodymyr, founded the first school of embroideries in Kiev .
A chaplet
T: As far as we know, a chaplet
is the girl’s decoration. Am I right?
P :
Yes you are right. But the Ukrainian chaplet is not only a decoration, but it
is also a guard. To twine a chaplet is a real science. To sum it up there were
12 flowers in the chaplet of a grown – up girl.
I won’t
go into details but in short there were 77 chaplets Ukraine , 40 of them are medical, 24 are ritual, 13
are magical.
Ribbons
P :I want to say a few words about ribbons. There were
21 ribbons in the chaplet. They were
red, light-blue and dark-blue yellow, etc. For example, a yellow ribbon in is a
symbol of the sun, a light-green ribbon is a symbol of beauty and youth. There are many folk proverbs about chaplets.
For example:
Who can
twine a chaplet, that can love the life. Хто
вміє віночок вити , той вміє життя любити.
What a chaplet – such a voice. Який
вінок – такий голосок
What a
yard, such a chaplet у цьому дворку, як у вінку.
A towel (RUSHYK)
T: There is one thing in the Ukrainian house that is very important. Our people say, “The house without a towel is like a family without children” A towel on the wall is our old tradition. A towel is compared with a song.
P: I’d like to draw your attention to the towels. There are different kinds of towels. For
example, styrka is for plates, benches and a table. Utyrach is for a face and
hands.
Pokutnyk is for walls,
vesilni is for weddings.
Every Ukrainian girl
could embroider.
There was no birth, wedding or death
without a towel.
Holidays
T: What winter holidays do you know?
P: Christmas,
the old New Year
T: What things do you
associated with the words “Christmas, the old New Year” in the past Ukraine ? (see Mind – map #1)
Christmas is the most
beloved holiday among Ukrainians. On Christmas
eve the family gathers for a holy supper of 12 dishes. The beginning of a holy
supper is signaled by the first star. Christmas eve supper starts with a
lighting of a candle. I won’t go into detail but I wont to say that the main dish is KUTYA made of honey, poppy seeds and
wheat kernels boiled in pure water.
On the 6th of January
people clean their houses, cook much food and have KOLYADA. In the evening a
group of boys comes. They sing songs called KOLYADKY. It is interesting to know
that only boys must sing kolyadky, because girls bring unhappiness.
(A song in
Ukrainian))
SHCHEDRIVKY
(a song in Ukrainian)
T:
Spring comes after winter. What things do you associate with the word “Easter”
(see mind – map #2)
P –
11: Easter is the most important Christian holiday of the
year. It is interesting that there is no fixed date of this holiday. It is
celebrated according to the Moon calendar on the first Sunday after the first
spring full Moon. It is on Sunday between the 4th of April and the 8th
of May.
The week before Easter is called Pure
Week. People clean their houses. The last Sunday before Easter is called Willow Sunday. On this
daypussy willow branches are blessed in the church.
Role – play
T: Imagine that you are in church on Willow Sunday. What do you want
to do there? Who wants to act?
P : The people tap one another with the branches repeating the wish, “Be as
tall as the willow, as healthy as the water and as rich as the earth. Not I am
tapping, the willow is tapping, Easter is in week.”
P : To many people Easter means coming of spring. In spring the trees send
out new leaves. Birds build their nests and lay out their eggs. We color Easter
eggs and give them to our friends and relatives. On Easter people go to the
church to bless their food.
People greet each other “Christ risen” and
kiss each other three times. People often sing songs (vesnyanky). I want to
sing one for your.
(ученики поют
веснянку)
P : I know that PYSANKY are painted and KRASHANKY are colored.
PYSANKA is a painted egg with symbolic signs. White
eggs are used for it.
KRASHANKA is an egg in one color. For example, a red egg means happiness,
life, love; a yellow egg means the moon and stars; a blue egg means the sky,
health; a green egg means the harvest, the resurrection of nature.
There are also DRYAPANKY and
SHKRYABANKY.
T. Our national trees are willows
and snowball trees. There are many poems and songs about these trees in Ukraine . People say that there no Ukraine without a willow and a snowball – tree (Без вербы
и
калины
нема
Украины)
A word search
T: The words are on the topic of our meeting “Ukrainian National traditions
They go across and down. Your
task is to find as many words as possible.
